Giving a talk at the Tri-Institutational Stem Cell...
I gave my first talk at a real conference yesterday! It went really well, and I am happy I had the experience of talking in front of a large audience. This is a picture of me concluding my talk! It felt great to be done! And this was the reward….

Happy Valentine's Day!
This morning I was reminded what V-day is all about when I received a text message from a friend that said… “A friend is someone who knows the song in your heart and can sing it back to you when you have forgotten the words” Happy Valentine’s Day to all of my amazing friends! Some fun Valentine’s Day material: 1. 14 Ways an Economist Says I Love You - warning:...

Ramen places in San Francisco
I LOVE ramen! Especially during the winter time on a cold SF night. Here are some of the places I have been & what I liked about them… 1. The #1 ramen place in my opinion is Katana-ya (although I have not eaten at all of the recommended ramen places in and close to SF). Ambiance: a small restaurant with a bit of a wait (10-20 minutes) but it is worth it. You know you found a great...

Happy birthday to....ME :)
Cheers to another year! To celebrate my birthday, Rob and I drove out an hour north of the city to Petaluma to take a tour of the Lagunitas brewery. Since I started brewing, I really wanted to learn more about each of the steps involved in brewing and the ingredients that go into the beer. When we arrived, our very enthused tour guide brought us first to a bar where he treated us very well and...

Greens Restaurant & Goodbye Kate
Looking for a good vegetarian place in SF? I highly recommend Greens Restaurant located at Fort Mason. Not only because it provides a great meal, but because it also has an interesting history and provides amazing service and ambiance. Albert and I said goodbye to Kate on Sunday by enjoying a nice brunch at Greens. Here are some highlights. Kate- We will miss you tons! History: Greens was built...

Poison oak
This is poison oak. I do NOT recommend rolling around in it..otherwise your will have these all over your body… NASTY! and as bad as it looks, it itches a million times worse. Some tips if you do find yourself in this situation: 1) Wash yourself (a lot) and everything you wore in the past few days in hot water with soap. Wash your towel and sheets too. 2) Go to the doctor and get a...

Coffee
After my one week adventure to Costa Rica where I drank some of the best coffee I have ever tried, I picked up a new hobby…learning about coffee. Needless to say when I saw this article in 7 x 7 the day after I flew back to the states, I got super excited..it is time to try them all! Check out these highly rated coffees. 1) Sightglass Coffee Roasters 270 Seventh Street San Francisco, CA,...

Brewing 101 ...one week later
During the fermentation process, the yeast converts glucose from the wort to alcohol and carbon dioxide gas which gives the beer its alcohol content and its carbonation. For a week we monitored our beer to make sure gases were being produced. After a week, we transferred our beer into a secondary fermentor. After a week in the secondary fermentor, we transferred our beer into bottles and are...

Brewing 101
What should I have done after my half marathon? Probably eat, sleep and veg on the couch. What did I do? Learn to brew :) Naturally, if I can do science, I can brew…right? My co-worker and I are convinced that we have to be good at this…it can’t be half as hard as research and the rewards are so much better! So here goes day one of brewing 101: step one: after cleaning...

Team Trolls comes in First!
We started off grumpy, waking at 4:00 am but we performed well and came in first place in the Olympic Relay during the Golden Gate Triathlon on Sunday June 26th! Matt started us off with a strong 1 mile swim. Drew kept our lead during his 26 miles of biking on a tough hilly route. And I finished off the race with a 6 mile run doing a personal best of 8:13 minute miles! We had a ton of fun and...

Dogfest 2011
There is always something interesting going on in San Francisco! DogFest 2011 is probably the best event I have been to since I moved to this city.  I wandered over to Duboce Park and spent my morning getting bombarded by wet kisses from some of the friendliest dogs. Dog Fest 2011 is an opportunity for dogs to show off their talents…not to mention cuteness! Here are some of my favorites: 1)...

Pouching eggs 101
Put 2 bored scientists and a lawyer in one room on a Saturday afternoon and what do they come up with…. ….Fried pouched eggs! It only took us two tries to perfect the art of pouching eggs and three to get a delicious fried pouched egg. With little prior experience and some memories of how to pouch eggs from conversations long ago, we learned to pouch eggs without a smart phone and...

Broccoli- Cheddar Soup
As a kid, I had a special talent- the ability to get really sick before any important and/or fun event. First Holy Communion- woke up with a fever over 100 degrees. I spent many Christmas Eve nights opening presents in bed under my comforter. As an adult, I have finally grown out of my special talent- for the most part. Until this week when I get sick a few days before the 12K I have been...

A perfect Sunday morning with Buttermilk pancakes
7am and I am up on Sunday morning. With food on my mind, I could not fall back asleep. I remembered the buttermilk leftover from last weekends cupcake baking extravaganza. What a shame it would be for it to go to waste! Since the stores were not open, I went on a search for the simplest recipe using ingredients I already had at home. Success! Buttermilk pancakes from allrecipes. It was time for...

Zippy 5 K 2010- April 18th
On April 18th, a group of us (roommates and friends) ran the 5K in Golden Gate Park. This was no ordinary 5K with the intense runners lining up at the front, hoping to get their fastest time yet. Instead, Zippy the clown was up front, tempting us with delicious mini-donuts. But we were right behind him..determined to kick his butt! Well maybe we weren’t RIGHT behind him. After missing the...

St. Louis in the spring time
When telling people that I am going to St. Louis for a visit, I often get a confused look. ‘Why would you go to St. Louis?! There is nothing there!’ While it may not be the hottest, most happening city, St. Louis is beautiful in the spring time and has lots to offer its visitors. During my visit (April 9-12), the weather was gorgeous. It was refreshing to get out of rainy San...

New York Style Pizza: truly New York
One of the things that will always keep me coming back to New York (excluding family and friends of course) is Pizza! I have tried pizza in different cities and even countries and New York pizza is still my favorite. The New Yorkers have mastered the art of pizza making with their extra thin crust that is so perfectly crispy, the flavorful sauce and generous amounts of cheese. And the...

Super bowl XLIV
This past Sunday, the Saints beat the Colts 31-17. Do not fret! I will not make an attempt to talk about football. Instead, I will talk about what I know more about…FOOD! And my roommates. I live in a house with twelve other roommates each offering a unique personality...
